Salary and Benefits The salary range for this position is $4,900 to $5,833 a month. Starting salary placement depends on qualifications, experience and salary budget, and will not exceed $5,833 a month.
This position is eligible for a broad range of benefits, including medical, dental, vision, life and disability insurances, retirement (CalPERS), tuition waiver, vacation and sick leave. In addition, 14 paid holidays are offered each year; 13 scheduled on specific days and a Personal Holiday that may be taken any time during the year.

Reporting to the Dean of Students, the Campus Recreation Director is responsible for the management and supervision of all aspects of the Recreation Center and Campus Recreation Programs.
Major duties of the position include, but are not limited to, the following:
Uphold the mission for Campus Recreation and its role as it fits with the direction and philosophy of the Division of Student Affairs.
Maintain general oversight of the business operations of the Campus Recreation Programs and Recreation Center Operations.
Ensure compliance with University and Campus Recreation operating guidelines, policies and procedures including the development and implementation of risk management guidelines and staff safety training and preparedness.
Responsible for sound fiscal management and oversight of the student fee supported Campus Recreation operational budget and reserve accounts. Prepare budgets, evaluate financial reports; approve invoices, requisitions, transfer vouchers, and online payroll system. Responsible for the managing and meeting of expense and revenue goals.
Provide benchmark statistics, analysis, and reporting on Campus Recreation Programs and the Recreation Center. Collaborates with Entrepreneurial Activities Marketing Department to define target markets and to develop a comprehensive promotional campaign for Campus Recreation.
Development of Campus Recreation program offerings for the university ensuring safety, service, inclusiveness, and collaboration and student emphasis.
Manage Super Kid Camp, including budget development and oversight, staffing, marketing and risk management of program.
Oversee the capital replacement of fitness and recreational sports equipment and collaborate with building management to assure capital projects are completed in a planned and timely manner.
In conjunction with the Dean, prepare, present, and implement short and long term departmental goals.
Directly supervise the development, planning, and direction of assigned programs of supervision.
For programs that fall under direct supervision, coordinate policies and procedures for user sign-ups, collection of fees, and provide facility and program information.
Determine the eligibility of users of programs that fall under direct supervision and collect appropriate user information and records.
For programs that fall under direct supervision, develop and implement safety, risk, injury, and emergency response management procedures striving for a safe and fair environment for participants, programs, and facilities.
Develop and implement policies and training around appropriate programming based upon standards put forth by the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Program (NIRSA).
Work with persons of all abilities and disabilities in trying to meet their fitness and recreational needs.
Support the promotion of other Campus Life, recreational, fitness, health, wellness, and athletic activities and services on campus as appropriate.
Develop and implement policies, procedures, and operational systems for safely and successful operation of the Campus Recreation Programs and Recreation Center.
Manage and track expenditures and revenues generated through programs, services, and rentals.
Work with in-house and other campus entities to secure facilities from unauthorized or improper usage.
Coordinate regular facility and equipment checks as well as coordinate custodial, regular, and long-term maintenance for the Recreation Center.
Develop and implement operations and practices that fully support the sustainability incorporated into the design of the facility.
Participate in and provide support to the Student Center and Rec Center Board of Advisers.
Staff Supervision (Full-time and Part-time):
Recruit, hire, train, supervise, and evaluate full-time employees employed in Campus Recreation, including the Fitness Coordinator, Outdoor Recreation Coordinator and Campus Recreation Coordinator.
Recruit, hire, train, and supervise student employees, volunteers, and interns assisting with program areas under direct supervision.
Serve as a resource and advisor for individual students to promote and enhance student development.
Conduct retreats or trainings as needed and develop a strong professional team and student development model.
Actively develop the role of Campus Recreation activities and activities as part of the Campus Life component on campus.
Implement and emphasize student development initiatives.
Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with on and off campus entities including, but not limited to the following: Campus Life, Residential Life, Student Health Center, Employee Wellness Committee, Intercollegiate Athletics, Department of Kinesiology, Facilities Services, Police Services, and other departments as appropriate.
Bridge academic learning with co-curricular and extracurricular activities within Campus Recreation through the development of relationships with academic departments and other avenues of personal growth through experiential education.
Maintain thorough communication with the Department of Kinesiology and Intercollegiate Athletics regarding policies and remain open to advisement from these areas to make shared resources, space, and efforts workable for all sports and recreation units on campus.
Actively participate in management meetings, staff meetings, staff trainings, campus committees, regional and national organizations
The incumbent is to perform all other duties as assigned.
Duties take place mostly in an office setting location in the Recreation Center at Sonoma State University, however additional duties may be performed in various locations on the Sonoma State University campus, including working both indoors and outdoors to support and participate in university activities and events. As an exempt employee, the Campus Recreation Manager has some flexibility in work schedule, but must be available during regular campus hours and maintain acceptable attendance at such levels as is determined by the Appropriate Administrator. Specific start time of this position is determined by Appropriate Administrator. Evening and weekend hours may be required and will be specified only to meet operational needs. Position also requires occasional travel, including by airplane.
Qualifications This position requires a Master's degree and a minimum of five (5) years of combined programming, administrative, supervision, and management experience with increasing responsibilities in campus recreation or a related field. Must be proficient in word processing and have intermediate experience with spreadsheets, databases, internet, and e-mail. Must have prior successful experience with fiscal responsibility, including oversight of revenue generation, prudent purchasing practices, annual budget development and budget monitoring. Requirements include strong knowledge of programming, operations, facilities management, risk management, staffing, and philosophies congruent with campus recreation practices and standards set forth by NIRSA: Leaders in Collegiate Recreation (NIRSA). Must have strong ability to evaluate operations and implement infrastructure improvements. Must have prior experience with policy and procedure development and implementation. Should have a basic understanding of and commitment to sustainable practices. Must be able to provide leadership and vision to campus and have experience in the supervision and evaluation both full-time staff and student staff. The position also requires a strong commitment to student development practices. Requires excellent attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and excellent oral and written communication skills. Must have a strong understanding of customer service and building relationships. Selected candidate will be required to obtain current American Red Cross Adult CPR and AED certifications or equivalent within the first thirty days of employment. Intermediate/advanced] proficiency with computers and Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel) required. Knowledge of PeopleSoft preferred.

Must have strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects and competing priorities simultaneously, adjusting quickly to changes needed on a daily basis. Must have the ability to effectively communicate with all levels within the university and establish and maintain productive and effective, inclusive working relationships amongst diverse populations including staff, faculty, administration, students, and other internal and external constituents.
The duties of this position may include participation in decisions that may have a material financial benefit to the incumbent.
