Hobart and William Smith Colleges (HWS) invite applications for the Dean of Hobart College. The Dean develops and implements a mission statement in support of men’s education within the context of a student-centered, coordinate-colleges environment. As part of the coordinate educational experience at HWS, the Dean will articulate and strategically execute a vision for the intellectual, professional, and personal development of students; will support and enhance the traditions of Hobart College; and will provide leadership on efforts and initiatives designed to support student success. This position requires a high amount of visibility on campus and at campus and community events, and a collaborative working style with the college community. The Dean supervises two Assistant Deans and the Office staff and reports to the Vice President and Senior Dean of the Colleges.
The Dean will lead the College in the following ways:
Develop programs and projects designed to address the development of the whole student; to enhance student success over their time at Hobart College; and to prepare them for personal and professional success in an increasingly multicultural and global society.
Work collaboratively with faculty and staff to support undergraduate students in a holistic and integrated manner.
Integrate the academic mission with student affairs programs in ways that extend the educational experience beyond the classroom and improve student retention.
Work with students to craft their HWS experience by integrating academic, social, and personal aspects of student life from a male-identity perspective.
Support and enhance Hobart College traditions.
Advise student organizations and honor societies that represent Hobart College (e.g., student government, student trustees).
Work with parents and guardians as needed and in compliance with campus policies as well as state and federal laws.
Represent the College at events for admissions, alumni relations, advancement, and in the Geneva community.
Supervise the staff of the Hobart Dean’s Office, including Assistant Deans, support staff, and student workers.
Serve on faculty and administrative governance bodies focused on student achievement and success.
Collaborate closely with the William Smith Dean’s Office, members of the President’s Cabinet, the Hobart Alumni Association, student leaders, and the faculty and staff of the Colleges.
Serve as primary spokesperson for the College.
Perform other duties as assigned
experience in higher education, student advising, and student development with an established record of student success and innovation is required. The Dean will be an individual of vision, intellectual breadth, and high energy who is relationship-driven and committed to serving the needs of the students. The Dean will have demonstrated management, staff supervision, leadership skills, and an ability to develop bridges with various constituencies. The Dean will possess excellent interpersonal, problem-solving, and communication (both oral and written) skills. Demonstrated evidence of establishing and maintaining effective relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members is highly desired, as well as the ability to manage multiple tasks in a complex environment.
This is a full-time, 12-month, benefits-eligible administrative position. Normal hours of work are 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. during the academic year with some evening and weekend responsibilities and more flexibility in the summer. The salary is competitive.
